As many of you may know, pharmaceutical contractors do this every single day and it is really quite a simple math formula to determine the conversion rate from liquid to solid.  It goes something like this:

1 ounce of raw Essiac powder diluted into 32 ounces of water equals 28.349 grams of solid powder divided by 32 ounces of liquid water.  This equals .886 milligrams of solid powder.  This simply means if you took .886 milligrams of the Essiac powder, by itself, and injested it (hard to do without water) however if you managed to ge it down, it would be equal to one ounce of tea.

Now the challenge really begins because the milligram capacity of a soft gel (the amount of stuff you can fit inside the soft gel) is .583 mg.    So, how do we fit .886 mg of Essiac powder inside a soft gel that only holds .583 mg?

The answer is extracts.  Through testing and research we determined that we could use the powder form of 5 of the herbs needed for the 8 herb formula.  We then take the remaining 3 herbs and convert them to an extract form, such as a 4-1 ratio to the powder.  As you all know, an extract is simply a condensed form of a product, like frozen orange juice.  When you add the water back to the frozen orange juice, it becomes whole again.

Mechanically the production works like this:

1. Our herbs are orderded from our various suppliers of organic herb growers.  The growers send us a sample from their on hand inventory for testing.

1. Since we manufacture our product to FDA standards of cGMP regulations (compliant to good manufacturing practices) we are required to test every herb for microbiological limits, such as E. Coli, Salmonella and also for heavy metal limits such as lead, mercury, cadmium, et

1. After receipt of the herb inventory needed for production, we are required by cGMP regulations to test the actual inventory a second time and record that.  There is always the possibility that the original test samples could be different than the actual inventory shipped.

1. Upon approval of the herbs they are then compounded.  The compounding process is a series of mixing the 5 herbs and the 3 extracts to the exact formula and adding inactive ingredients such as deionized water, soy lecithin which becomes a loose paste and it is forced through various filters, each filtering system finer than the next.  This process eventually creates a fine grit that can be mechanically forced through insertion tubes.  The grit of this herb paste needs to be a fine as possible as to not pierce the skin of the soft gel, causing it to leak.

1. The production process is fully automated and the soft gel machine begins to form the soft gels into a mold, which is heated.  The actual soft gel is simply made of inactive ingredients such as Soybean Oil, Gelatin, Glycerin, Beeswax, which disloves in the stomach in about 12 to 20 minutes.  As the machine fills the mold to create the soft gel,  the insertion tube measures out the amount of paste needed to fill the soft gel and inserts it into a cavity of the soft gel.

1. After the production, the soft gels are left on drying racks on top of absorbtion paper for up to a week.  The paper absorbs any “leakers” and these are removed during the sorting process.  While the soft gels are being dried, we are required once more to test the soft gels to be certain that during the manufacturing process, there was no contamination to the product.

1. This soft gel, now becomes a 398 mg product once the filling and herbs are added and it is bottled ready for human consumption.

So, taking 2 soft gels in the morning and 2 soft gels in the evening would equal taking 2 ounces of Essiac tea in the AM and 2 ounces in the PM.  The soft gel method is not only the easy way to go, withhout any storage, mixing, brewing, and being totally portable but it is the most accurate way to take your Essiac.  Each dose is 100% exact, as opposed to adding too much water to your brew or drinking less or more when you are trying to measure your ounces.

An article, entitled “Asparagus for Cancer” was printed in the Cancer News Journal back in December of 1979, which states that asparagus might cure cancer.  There have been many case studies done with patients using asparagus for treating Hodgkin’s disease, cancer of the bladder, lung cancer and skin cancer.

The Beginning of Essiac

It is believed that essiac was used by Native Americans for the purpose of treating maladies at a time when there was little or no cancer. It is interesting to note that this original essiac was not actually created with the goal of treating cancer in mind.

While Rene Caisse was working as a nurse in a hospital, one of her patients gave her some of this essiac and told Caisse that she was using it to treat her cancer. Rene Caisse was astounded to learn that the woman’s cancer had been reversed! However, this version of essiac was not effective in every case; in fact, quite a few people died in spite of being treated with the essiac.

Modifications to the Essiac Formula Began

After many years of research, doctors developed a version of the essiac formula that was to be injected into the patient. Treatment by injection turned out to yield more consistent results in the patients. All of this information has been documented in a hand-written testimonial by Rene Caisse as well as signed papers by staff physicians.

Rene Caisse attempted to get permission from the Canadian Ministry of Health to give physicians throughout Canada the go-ahead to inject the authentic essiac formula, but she didn’t get anywhere. Around that time, Dr. Brusch’s older brother had heard about Caisse’s work and decided to research the information. However, he too was unsuccessful with convincing the Canadian Government to officially recognize the formula.

One of the formulas being tested was an injectable four herb version. This four herb formula was never meant to be consumed orally. In 1959, Rene Caisse decided to take further action. Since physicians weren’t allowed to inject this essiac formula without government approval, she was concerned that this valuable formula may be lost forever. Dr. Charles Brusch invited Rene Caisse to the Brusch Medical Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in an attempt to develop an oral formula that carried the same efficacy level as the injection. There were fewer rules and regulations surrounding tea made to drink as opposed to an injection.

Resperin Corp. Gains Preliminary Rights

In 1977, Rene Caisse signed over a four herb formula to Resperin Corp. of Canada under the stipulation that Resperin complete clinical tests on the formula. The agreement granted permission for the use of essiac as research only, and dictated that if they did not complete these tests, Dr. Charles Brusch would have complete control of the formula (Dr. Brusch and Caisse had performed clinical tests on essiac together in the 1960′s). It turns out that Resperin breached the contract by never completing the tests, but the formula still remained with them.

After further research, an oral essiac formula was developed that contained eight herbs, including the four herbs from the formula that was designed to be injected. Exclusive rights to the formula were left to Dr. Charles Brusch in 1977 (a year prior to Rene Caisse’s death). This formula was deemed to be the most effective formula to date.

The eight herb formula Rene Caisse revealed to Dr. Charles Brusch contained: Burdock Root, Blessed Thistle, Kelp, Red Clover, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm Back, Turkey Rhubarb Root, and Watercress. Brusch performed eight years of clinical research on this oral form of essiac. He even took it himself when he fell ill with cancer. Brusch made the claim that this eight herb essiac alone cured his cancer.

Rene Caisse passed away in 1978, and Dr. Brusch passed away in 1993. The eight herb formula that was found to be superior in the Brusch clinical trials is the most effective form of essiac tea available.

First of all, there are actually two formula’s for Essiac Tea.  The Original formula was made of 4 herbs.  This is the original formula passed from the Ojibway Indians to Rene Caisse who introduced this first in Canada and then to America back in the early 1920′s.

Then there is the Improved eight herb version.  As we all know, the original doesn’t mean the best, it simply means the first.  And in most cases, the first is not always the best.  The Eight Herb version is made of the original 4 herbs however 4 additional “potentiator” herbs were added.  These potentiating herbs help modify and improve the effectiveness and potency of the original 4 herbs.  This eight herb improved version was created by the same Nurse Caisse with the help of Dr. Charles Brusch MD, research scientist and personal physician to President John F. One of the obvious reasons for making an improved version was that clearly the toxins and pollutants that entered our body’s in the 1800′s is now greatly expanded due to modern society and things such a jet fuel in our systems, frozen foods and additives for fast foods, pesticides, just to name a few.  It was time for Essiac to be upgraded to meet the challenges of a new fast paced society.
